Mexico Arrests Top Drug Figure

Mexican police say they have captured a top figure in Mexico's powerful Sinaloa drug cartel.

Authorities in the Mexican state of Baja California say Manuel Garibay was detained in Mexicali, across the border from the U.S. city of Calexico, California.

The state public security department says Garibay was the Sinaloa cartel's link to Colombian cocaine suppliers. Officials says Garibay replaced Vicente Zambada, who was arrested last year.

Zambada's father, Ismael, is one of the leaders of the Sinaloa cartel together with Joaquin Guzman.

Guzman has been on the run since escaping from a Mexican prison in 2001.

Last year, the U.S. financial magazine Forbes put him on its annual list of the world's richest people, reporting he had a net worth of $1 billion. The Mexican government criticized Guzman's inclusion on the list.

The United States has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Guzman's capture.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has deployed thousands of troops across Mexico to fight the country's drug cartels. The spiraling violence has left thousands of people dead.
