Deadly Weather Thrashes Parts of US


Authorities say violent storms have pounded parts of the midwest and southeast U.S., leaving one person dead and several injured.

Emergency officials in the southern state of Mississippi say one person died Thursday after a tornado tore threw the eastern part of the state.

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn said the tornado damaged buildings and caused power outages in Kemper County. Officials in nearby Noxubee County also reported damage and injuries from the tornado, with emergency responders rushing to the scene to help.

Officials have also issued a severe storm warning for the southern state of Alabama.

Overnight, a severe storm thrashed parts of the U.S. Midwest with heavy rain, hail and even suspected tornadoes, prompting Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to declare a state of emergency.
