Lawyers for the son of Senegal's former president Abdoulaye Wade say he has been detained in Dakar after submitting information to the nation's anti-corruption court.
The court had given Karim Wade until Monday to explain how he had acquired assets that are estimated to be worth more than $1 billion.
Karim Wade's legal team said it filed the documents at the courthouse Monday, after which time Wade was taken into police custody. It is not clear whether he has been charged with anything.
Wade was a presidential advisor and government minister during his father's 12 years in power.
The anti-corruption court had given Wade one month on March 15 to prove he legally acquired his assets.
Senegal's state-run news agency quotes one of Wade's lawyers, Cire Cledor Ly, as saying the court's move is a "show of force," but says Wade's team has "the law on their side."
Wade's father lost his re-election bid for the presidency in March 2012. The vote was marked by violence and controversy over whether Wade was entitled to run for a third term. President Macky Sall won that election in a run-off vote.
