South Africa Suspends 5 After Private Plane Uses Air Force Base

South Africa has suspended five top officials after a private plane carrying guests for a wedding used a military base without proper permission.

Justice Minister Jeffrey Radebe announced the suspensions Friday and promised an investigation would uncover how the plane with nearly 200 people was allowed to land Tuesday at the Waterkloof Air Force base outside Pretoria.

The flight was chartered by the Gupta family, which is known to have close ties to President Jacob Zuma and is a major financial backer of the ruling ANC party.

Critics are describing the incident as a security breach and an example of ANC cronyism.

The five suspended officials include two Air Force brigadier-generals and the chief of state protocol.

In addition, two police officers and a reservist were arrested for escorting the guests from the airport to the wedding site in Sun City.

The plane, an Airbus A330, has been moved off the air force base to Johannesburg's Tambo International Airport.
