Report: UN Panel Finds Sanctions Hinder N. Korea Nuclear Program

A United Nations panel says financial and trade sanctions and an arms embargo have significantly hindered North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

In a report seen by the Reuters news agency, the panel says the sanctions have not stopped the North from building missiles and nuclear weapons. But it says the sanctions cut off funds that would have gone into expanding these weapons programs.

According to Reuters, the panel says North Korea is working to avoid sanctions by money laundering and setting up bank accounts where laws and regulations are lax.

The panel is also calling on U.N. members to be on the lookout for North Korean attempts to buy hardware that is crucial for building nuclear weapons.

The panel recommends more sanctions against senior officials and government atomic energy and munitions agencies, as well as one man from Kazakhstan and two from Ukraine .
