Earthquake Hits Northern Japan, No Reports of Damage

Seismologists say a strong earthquake has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan's main Honshu island, but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The U.S. Geological Service put the magnitude of the quake at 6.1. The service said it hit at 2:48 p.m. Saturday in the Pacific Ocean, about 50 kilometers from the town of Nami, near the tsunami-ravaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. The quake struck at a depth of just over 40 kilometers.

Tokyo Electric Power Company's two nuclear plants in Fukushima reported no new irregularities after the quake.
