Iran Reports Attending Meeting With US Navy

Iran's official media are reporting that a high-ranking Iranian naval commander attended a meeting on regional piracy where U.S. Navy commanders were present.

The dispatch Thursday in Iran is the first public word that navy officers of both countries were present in Sri Lanka earlier this month in discussions on fighting piracy in the Gulf of Aden.

The report says representatives of 22 countries, including the U.S., Britain, France and Russia, attended the meeting.

Iran says the discussions were part of a multi-national celebration of the 60th anniversary of Sri Lanka's navy.

Iran opposes the presence of the U.S. Navy fleet in the Persian Gulf, and the two countries have had no diplomatic ties since 1979.
