An Analysis of Egypt's Crisis

A Middle East democracy and human rights expert speaks about the roots and implications of the crisis in Egypt

VOA spoke with Middle East expert Sherif Mansour about the unfolding political crisis in Egypt. Mr. Mansour was born in Cairo, and spent the first 25 years of his life in Egypt. He is now a senior program officer with Freedom House, an organization dedicated to promoting free institutions worldwide.

Mr. Mansour talks about why pro-government individuals have attacked anti-government protesters; why the Egyptian Army has so far been restrained in its response to the crisis; what might happen if Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak steps down, or if the opposition Muslim Brotherhood takes power; which other countries in the Middle East are susceptible to political unrest.
