Suicide Bomber Kills 23 at Funeral in Northern Iraq

A suicide bomber detonated explosives at a funeral in northern Iraq, on Saturday, killing at least 23 people.

The attack took place in a town near Mosul in the volatile province of Nineveh.

Medical officials say a bomber wearing an explosives belt targeted mourners at a ceremony for a member of the Shabak ethnic minority who died of natural causes.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility. But, militants have targeted sites in ethnically mixed Nineveh province in previous attacks.

In recent months, Iraq has experienced a nationwide surge in violence.

United Nations casualty figures show more than 4,800 civilians were killed this year through August, a figure that is more than double the number of fatalities for the same period last year.

On Saturday, explosions elsewhere in Iraq left several people dead, including a roadside bomb blast north of Baghdad that killed two people.
