Kagame's Party Expected to Triumph in Rwandan Polls

by VOA News

Rwandans voted in a parliamentary election Monday expected to result in an easy win for the party of President Paul Kagame.

Some six million Rwandans were eligible to vote in the poll for 53 parliamentary seats.

Among the main parties contesting the race is a coalition led by the ruling Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF).

Other parties vying for seats include the Social Democrats, the Liberal Party and the PS Imberankuri.

The RPF holds 42 out of the 53 elected seats in the outgoing parliament.

The remaining 27 seats in the 80-member parliament are reserved for women, youth and disabled representatives. Those lawmakers will be appointed by local and national councils on Tuesday and Wednesday.
