Haiti Police Arrest Suspects in Series of Highway Robberies

by VOA News

Police in Haiti have arrested a group of suspected armed robbers who targeted motorists traveling on a major highway between the capital, Port-au-Prince, and the southern part of the island. Residents, afraid for their safety, welcomed the police crackdown.

Micheline Poulard, a resident of effected area Petit Goave, said, "the situation is not good. When those gang members come we have to hide because they're robbing people.  We are very happy we saw the police coming today to stop this problem."

Police, with the backing of United Nations peacekeepers, carried out a two-day operation that saw the arrest of eight men in Petit Goave who were allegedly responsible for the holdups.

Police say the suspects set up checkpoints to rob truck drivers and other motorists over a period of several weeks.  They say the robbers have also shot at police vehicles.
