Yemen Attacks Leave 56 Dead

by VOA News

Yemeni officials say suspected al-Qaida militants carried out three simultaneous attacks in the southern part of the country Friday killing at least 56 policemen and soldiers.

The deadliest attack was a car bombing at an army camp in Shabwa province that killed 38 soldiers.  Another deadly explosion took place at a nearby location.

Gunmen also killed about 10 soldiers at a military headquarters in the town of Mayfaa.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but authorities are blaming al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

Yemeni authorities are leading a struggle against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which is seen by Western powers as one of the most dangerous branches of the terrorist group.
