Nine Indicted in Haitian Journalist Murder

by VOA News

A judge in Haiti has indicted nine people, including some close associates of former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, in the killing of radio journalist Jean Dominique more than a decade ago.

The former president was not indicted, but a former senator in Aristide's political party is among the nine.

An unknown gunman shot and killed the prominent, outspoken journalist and a security guard during the April 2000 incident in Port-au-Prince.

At least seven judges have worked on the case over a span of 14 years, resulting in Friday's indictments.

Dominique revolutionized Haitian broadcasting by criticizing abuses by those in power and addressing his audience in native Creole, rather than French.
