Women Poised to Win First Slopestyle, Ski Jumping Olympic Medals

A freestyle skier will make history Tuesday as women compete for medals in the first-ever Olympic slopestyle event at the winter games in Sochi.

Tuesday's competition ends with another first, as women make their debut in ski jumping.

American snowboarder Shaun White will try to win his third consecutive gold medal in the halfpipe. His competition includes Finland's Peetu Piiroinen, who took home silver at the 2010 games.

Meanwhile, Germany is hoping for a big day as medals are awarded in the women's luge competition, with Natalie Geisenberger and Tatjana Huefner leading after the second of four runs. Geisenberger won bronze and Huefner gold at the last Olympics in Vancouver.

A strong showing would help Germany move up in the medal count. They were fifth after Monday's competition.

The Netherlands, Canada and Norway were tied for the lead with seven medals, with the United States in fourth place. Canada and the Netherlands had the most golds with three each.

Medals are also being awarded Tuesday in the women's 10 kilometer biathlon pursuit, the men's and women's cross country sprint and women's 500-meter speed skating.

Pairs figure skaters perform their short programs Tuesday, while curling competition continues with round robin matches and women's ice hockey teams play preliminary games.

The U.S. and Canada -- fierce rivals and the consensus favorites to win the women's hockey gold medal in Sochi -- will clash on Wednesday.

Also Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee lifted its ban on India, which had been in place since December 2012 when the country's Olympic Association elected tainted officials. India elected new officials Sunday, clearing the way for its flag to be raised in the Olympic Village.

Three Indian athletes at the games can now compete representing the country, after marching in the opening ceremonies under the Olympic flag and competing as independents.

There are 98 medal events at the Sochi Games, 12 more than in Vancouver in 2010.
