Ex-Guerrilla Wins El Salvador Presidency

El Salvador's electoral court has declared ruling party candidate Salvador Sanchez Ceren the winner of last week's presidential election, after rejecting the opposition's challenge to the results.

Election officials said late Sunday that Mr. Ceren of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front won 50.1 percent of the votes, edging his opponent, Norman Quijano of the right-wing National Republican Alliance.

Quijano, the mayor of San Salvador, had filed a claim to annul the election because of alleged fraud. The electoral court said there was not enough evidence to back the claim.

Mr. Ceren is the first former guerrilla commander to hold the presidency since a truce ended a devastating 13-year civil war in 1992.
