Egypt Bombings Target Police, 2 Dead

Egyptian security officials say three bombs have exploded outside Cairo University, killing a senior police general and a civilian and wounding several others, including a number of top officers.

Wednesday's blasts are the latest violence targeting security forces in Egypt.

They hit riot police stationed outside the university in anticipation of near-daily anti-government protests by students who support ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood group.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Islamist militants have carried out similar operations against police and soldiers since the army ousted Mr. Morsi last July after mass protests against him.

The insurgency threatens Egypt's security ahead of a presidential election in May, as well as the vital tourist industry on which the country relies for revenue.

Earlier this week, the government said such attacks have killed nearly 500 people.

Security forces have also carried out a deadly crackdown on the brotherhood and Mr. Morsi's supporters, arresting at least 16,000 people and killing hundreds.
