Floods Kill Nearly 100 in Afghanistan

by VOA News

Afghan officials say floods triggered by heavy rain have killed more than 95 people in northern Afghanistan.

Deputy Provincial Governor Faqir Mohammad Juzjani told VOA's Afghan Service most of the at least 45 killed in Jawzjan province were sleeping when storms hit late Thursday.

A number of families in the Khuja Doko district were evacuated via helicopter but some refused to leave, citing concern for their livestock, Juzjani said. Local residents say at least 24 people are still missing.

Other deaths were reported in Faryab, Sar-i-pul and Badghis provinces.

At least 5,000 people are said to be displaced by the flash floods. Helicopters are continuing to search for the missing.
