Human Traffickers Abandon Hundreds of Sudanese in the Desert

Sudanese and Libyan soldiers have rescued more than 300 migrants abandoned by human smugglers in the desert near the shared border.

A Sudanese military spokesman says at least nine of the migrants were dead and the survivors were hungry and thirsty. He said many were in critical condition and brought to nearby towns for treatment.

The spokesman said human traffickers drove the victims into the desert, ordered them out the vehicles, and left them there. He said the smugglers only care about collecting their fees.

Sudanese migrants trying to flee war and other miseries often use the desert border crossing with Libya while trying to reach the Mediterranean and Europe.
