Local Afghan officials say more than 80 bodies have been recovered, two days after a deadly flash flood swept through a remote part of northern Afghanistan.
Rescuers in the Guzirga i-Nur district of Baghlan province struggled on Sunday to find victims in the unforgiving terrain, as army helicopters flew in supplies to thousands left homeless.
Lieutenant Fazel Rahman, the local police chief, said around 850 houses were destroyed and more than 1,000 were damaged by torrential rain and flooding, leaving thousands of people in need of shelter, food, water and medicine.
Authorities say the death toll is likely to rise, as dozens of people are still missing.
The flood comes a month after a massive landslide triggered by heavy rains buried a village in nearby Badakhshan province, killing hundreds.
Flooding and landslides are common during the spring rainy season in northern Afghanistan, where villages are primitive and unable to withstand the force of the water and mud.
