British PM Reshuffles Cabinet

by VOA News

The office of British Prime Minister David Cameron has announced Defense Secretary Philip Hammond will replace Foreign Minister William Hague, who stepped down in a surprise move Monday as Cameron reshuffles his Cabinet.

Hammond has spoken out in favor of Britain leaving the European Union if the EU does not enact reforms.

Cameron was also expected to announce other changes to his Cabinet on Tuesday, adding more women to counter criticism that his government is dominated by men. Women are expected to occupy six of Britain's 23 cabinet posts after the reorganization.

Hague is expected to remain in Parliament until next year, when he has said he will leave national politics.

Michael Fallon has been named defense secretary to replace Hammond. Fallon is a former junior energy secretary and another advocate of splitting from the European Union if reforms do not take place.

Cameron's controversial education secretary, Michael Gove, is among a number of mid-level ministers removed from their posts.
