The euphoria surrounding South Sudan’s independence from the north one year ago has given way to a more somber mood as unresolved disputes over borders and oil revenues continue to bedevil both Juba and Khartoum. Ambassador David Shinn, former US ambassador to Ethiopia and Burkina Faso and Jonathan Temin, Director of the Sudan Program at the US Institute for Peace, analyze the major internal and external challenges that both countries face and explore obstacles to and prospects for lasting peace with host Carol Castiel.
