British Foreign Secretary David Miliband says world powers have agreed to offer Iran new incentives to stop its sensitive nuclear work. Miliband said (Friday) in London that officials from Germany and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China -- agreed to update a previous offer to Iran.

But he said details of the amended offer to the Iranian government will not be made public. In June 2006, the six countries offered Iran economic aid and diplomatic incentives, if it would drop its uranium enrichment program. The Security Council has imposed three sets of sanctions on Iran for its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a process that can be used to make nuclear weapons. The United States and its Western allies accuse Iran of working to build a nuclear weapon. Iran says its atomic program is for peaceful purposes.
