The United States believes that it will be difficult to hold a credible election in Bangladesh with the state of emergency in force.

US Ambassador in Dhaka James F Moriarty told journalists after a meeting with Home Adviser Maj Gen (retd) MA Matin at the secretariat on Wednesday that it would be difficult to hold a credible election if the state of emergency remains in place.

He also said that he has mentioned a number of times that US feels that emergency rules should be lifted for free, fair and credible elections. He also hoped that the political parties of Bangladesh would eventually reach an agreement to lead the country to an era of democracy.
