Delegates to a meeting of the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group say members have approved a U.S.-backed plan to lift a decades-old ban on nuclear trade with India.

The group held third straight day of talks in Vienna today. Talks were due to end on Friday, but continued after some countries said they had reservations about waiving consortium rules that bar nuclear trade with states like India that have not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Washington needs the ban to be lifted so that it can move forward on a nuclear trade deal with India.

India's Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in a statement Friday that New Delhi remains committed to a voluntary moratorium on nuclear testing.

The U.S.-India nuclear deal must be approved by the U.S. Congress before it becomes law.
