A Humphrey Fellow from Bangladesh talks to VOA Bangla

Dr Uttam Kumar Das
Dr.
Uttam Kumar Das is a human rights lawyer from Bangladesh and is currently in
the United States as a Humphrey Fellow.
He
is affiliated with the Human Rights Center and Law School at the University of
Minnesota in Minneapolis and studying and researching on laws and policies
related to smuggling and trafficking of labor migrants.
In
this exclusive interview with VOABangla
Service Dr Uttam Kumar Das talks about his interest on studying smuggling and trafficking of labor migrants.
He said that while doing his Ph.D , his focus was on trafficking of women
across South Asia and during his studies , he also noticed that one of the
important aspects of human trafficking was labor trafficking. He added that
this being associated with basic human rights, his interests were focused on
this.
Dr.
Das who is enrolled as an Attorney in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh has
before worked in Bangladesh for the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) and for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for
about six years as a Legal Professional.
His
areas of research include law and policies related to trafficking in persons,
and legal regime for refugee protection in South Asia. He has mentionable
original publications on those issues.
Dr.
Das was also in journalism and written extensively on legal and human rights
issues.
