Professor Shahiduzzaman Analyzes Bhutan-Bangladesh Relationship

12-November-2009

Recently Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh had an official tour to Bhutan, the neighboring country where the two country signed agreements about cooperating on different economic and cultural matters .

Professor Shahiduzzaman of International Relations from Dhaka University, in an interview, has analyzed the relationship between these two countries. Professor Shahiduzzaman says that although Bhutan is a tiny country on the foot of Himalayas, it can be of great assistance for Bangladesh, particularly in power sector.

He says that if Bangladesh can import power from Bhutan this is going to bring in remarkable change there. He also feels that decision of the prime minister going to Bhutan first, presumably before going to India in December, has a symbolic value.

Professor Shahiduzzaman thinks that both in trade and connectivity this relation with Bhutan  is a complementary one to the relationship with India. He thinks India will cooperate with Bangladesh in expanding the relationship and SAARC might find a meaningful success overcoming  the security issues.
