Indonesian Authorities Believe Key Terrorist Killed in Police Raid

10-November-2005

Indonesian authorities say they believe one of the most wanted terrorists in Southeast Asia blew himself up during a police raid on a militant hideout in East Java Province.

Although identification is not yet certain, police say a severed head found at the scene appears to be that of Azahari bin Husin, a Malaysian accused of masterminding at least four attacks in Indonesia -- including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people. Two other militants also were killed in the police raid in the town of Batu.

Authorities surrounded the suspected hideout Wednesday after keeping it under surveillance for more than a week. That sparked a fierce gunbattle and an explosion that authorities say may have been a suicide blast.

Police, fearing the house may be booby trapped, did not immediately enter it. They were hoping to retrieve and identify the bodies sometime on Thursday.
