Bangladesh
elected member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a
three-year term beginning from January 1, 2010.
In
the election to elect four countries from Asia region, a total of 188 countries
cast their votes and Bangladesh got elected securing 185 votes, highest secured
by any country, says a press release of Bangladesh's mission in New York.
The election was held in the General Assembly hall at the 25th plenary meeting of the 64th UNGA when the delegates from the member states voted to elect 18 members of the 54-member ECOSOC from different geographical regions.
In an exclusive interview with Bangla , Dr Abdul Momen , the Permanent Representative from Bangladesh to the United Nations said that this election testifies the trust international community has placed on Bangladesh and her people. He hopes that increasingly Bangladesh will play leading role in resolving global problems.
The
other countries elected to the ECOSOC are: Ghana, Comoros, Zambia, Rwanda and
Egypt (from Africa), Ukraine and Slovakia (from Eastern Europe), Chile, Bahamas
and Argentina (from GRULAC Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries),
and Italy, Belgium, Canada and USA (from WEOG Group of Western European
Countries and Others).
