Dr Abdul Momen, the Permanent
Representative of Bangladesh to the UN expresses is optimism about the ongoing
Climate Conference at Copenhagen. He says although debates might continue on
the level of emission reduction or the amount of funds available for the
underdeveloped nations to enable them to meet the challenges of global warming.
In an exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service , Dr Momen describes the main agenda of this conference . He says firstly the conference will try to reach an agreement on the rate of emission and on the funding to be arranged for the affected countries. Dr Momen adds that Bangladesh is one of the worst sufferers of global warming and Bangladesh has moved a proposal for arranging a special fund for the nations who have suffered for no fault of theirs .
Referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s proposals, the Bangladeshi envoy in
UN says that the Prime Minister has asked for funds to be allocated for
Bangladesh to meet the challenge of global warming. She has also asked to
provide environmentally friendly technology.
Talking about about the stance that
India, South Africa , Brazil and China are taking , Dr Abdul Momen said that these
upcoming economies are concerned about the impact they might have by limiting the level of
carbon emission but they are also
beginning to realize the global disaster
of warming and they know that it might have an impact on them too . It
has been encouraging to see that Indian
Prime Minister is attending the climate conference and the country has pledged
to reduce the level of its green house gas emission.
