Amnesty International
The human rights group Amnesty International has demanded that military-ruled Burma release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. In a news release Saturday,

Amnesty International Deputy Asia Director Catherine Baber called the house detention of the Nobel peace laureate a "travesty of justice." The statement says "It is unacceptable that authorities are holding individuals hostage to the political process and are grossly abusing judicial procedures to do so."

Media reports have said the military junta plans to extend Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest for another year on Sunday.

The leader of the opposition National League for Democracy has been under arrest since May of 2003. She has spent more than 10 of the last 16 years in detention.
