The Asian Human Rights Commission has condemned a Burmese court dismissal of the appeals by two activists who allegedly were jailed in retaliation for their pro-democracy activities.

A statement from the Hong Kong-based rights group says judges in the South Rangoon District Court hastily and unfairly dismissed the appeals filed by activists Ma Su Su Nwe and U Aung Pe.

Ma Su Su Nwe was reported jailed last month on charges of abusing local officials, while U Aung Pe has been in custody since last February on charges of giving private classes illegally.

The commission says the manner in which the two cases were dismissed suggests that international standards of fair appeal were not met. Burma's government has not responded to the accusations.
