Ministers from the Nonaligned Movement say they will set up an alternative news network to counter what they see as domination by biased Western news media.

Malaysia, the group's current leader, announced details of the plan on Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur at the end of a two-day Nonaligned Movement conference. The Nonaligned News Network-NNN is expected to begin operating in the first quarter of 2006.

Malaysia's state-owned news agency, Bernama, reports Burma's representatives at the meeting spoke in favor of the network and complained they have been targeted by unfair reporting in the past.

Burma's minister of information, General Kyaw Hsan, said his government hopes the enterprise "can find ways to rebuff" what he calls "unfair and baseless news produced by the Western media."

The Nonaligned Movement, a grouping of more than 100 countries, was formed during the Cold War with the intention of providing developing countries with an alternative to the Western and Eastern power blocs.
