美國之音設在美國首都華盛頓，是美國政府資助的國際廣播、電視及因特网多媒体新聞网，其宗旨是促進各國對美國、美國人民、文化和政策的了解。美國之音從1942年2月成立以來，一直秉承新聞報道力求准确、客觀、全面，以及介紹美國社會力求均衡、公正的原則。
美國之音負有獨立、客觀、准确、平衡、全面地報道新聞的責任。美國之音播出的新聞都要遵循以上新聞原則，每則新聞都必須有兩個以上可靠來源加以證實。當然，美國之音派駐世界各地記者實地采訪的報道可不在此限。
美國之音以45种語言，每周向世界各地廣播1300多個小時的廣播和電視節目。內容包括新聞、專題特寫、音樂文化、教育和評論，听眾一億多人。
美國之音設有英語新聞及節目部、外國語言播音部、工程部、行政部、總務部、電腦中心、因特网服務部等，其中外語播音部門最大，共有40多個部門，而中文部又是外語部門中最大的一個。
美國之音有1140多名正式員工以及眾多合同工，在美國及世界一些地區有22個記者站，派有30多名記者。同時，美國之音還在世界各地聘用几百名特約記者。
美國之音憲章
為了确定美國之音的使命和确保美國之音節目的完善，1960年起草的美國之音憲章于1976年7月12日由杰拉爾德福特總統簽署成為法律 (Public Law 94-350)。憲章規定：
通過廣播跟全世界人民直接交流符合美國的長遠利益。為了有效地達到這個目標，美國之音必須贏得听眾的關注和尊重。因此，美國之音的節目必須符合以下原則：
作為一個一貫可靠的、權威的新聞來源，美國之音播送的新聞必須准确、客觀、全面。
美國之音將代表整個美國，而不是美國社會的個別階層。所以，美國之音將平衡、全面地反映重要的美國思想和体制。
美國之音將清晰而有效地展示美國的政策，以及關于這些政策的負責任的討論和意見。
VOA CHARTER
The long-range interests of the United States are served by communicating directly with the peoples of the world by radio. To be effective, the Voice of America must win the attention and respect of listeners. These principles will therefore govern Voice of America (VOA) broadcasts:
1. VOA will serve as a consistently reliable and authoritative source of news. VOA news will be accurate, objective, and comprehensive.
2. VOA will represent America, not any single segment of American society, and will therefore present a balanced and comprehensive projection of significant American thought and institutions.
3. VOA will present the policies of the United States clearly and effectively, and will also present responsible discussions and opinion on these policies. (Public Law 94-350)
