18 Trapped in Indian Submarine Blaze

The Indian navy says an explosion and fire aboard a diesel-powered submarine have trapped as many as 18 sailors.

A navy spokesman says the explosion left the INS Sindhurakshak half-submerged at its berth in the Mumbai dockyard. The spokesman said the blast appears to be an accident. Emergency officials are responding to the fire and attempting to rescue the trapped sailors.

The sub was recently upgraded at a Russian shipyard.

The incident aboard the Sindhurakshak comes just days after India announced the reactor on its first home-built submarine is now operational.
