Officials say Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas plan to meet in two weeks for their first face to face talks since Mr. Abbas' election earlier this month.
The meeting will coincide with a planned visit to the region by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
News of the talks came Saturday, as Israeli and Palestinians security officials met to discuss the security situation.
The Israelis and Palestinians have recently taken steps to try to revive the peace process. Israel stopped offensive operations in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinians deployed thousands of police in the territory to stop militants from firing rockets on Israelis. Mr. Abbas is also trying to get Israel and Palestinian militants to agree to a ceasefire.
