Death Toll from Chinese Coal Mine Accident Rises

TEXT SIZE - +

The death toll from Monday's gas explosion in a Chinese coal mine now stands at 210. Rescuers discovered the body of another miner Wednesday at the state-owned Sunjiawan coal mine in the northeast province of Liaoning. Five other miners remain missing.

Meanwhile, five miners are dead and 17 others missing after an explosion Tuesday at an illegal coal mine in the southwest province of Yunnan. China has the deadliest coal mine industry in the world, accounting for at least 80 percent of all coal mining deaths last year.

Official records show more than 6,000 workers were killed last year. Beijing has vowed to improve safety at the mines, but China's growing energy demand has led owners to ignore safety concerns.
