A lawmaker from Taiwan's ruling coalition paid respects Monday at a Tokyo war shrine viewed by critics as a symbol of Japan's past militarism.
Su Chin-chiang, chairman of the Taiwan Solidarity Union, a partner in the ruling coalition, visited Yasukuni Shrine, where 14 convicted Japanese war criminals are honored along with other war dead - including thousands from Taiwan.
Annual visits to the shrine by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi have been a major cause of friction with China and South Korea.
Taiwan was colonized by Japan from 1895 to 1945.
Mr. Su said he visited to pay respects to the war dead including those from Taiwan.
