Thailand Prime Minister Calls for Major Overhaul of UN Management

TEXT SIZE - +

Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra says the United Nations needs a major management overhaul if the body is going to be revitalized and reformed.

Speaking Friday at the U.N. summit in New York City, Mr. Thaksin said the organization's leadership must accept changes, making it stronger, more responsive and more united.

The prime minister said capitalism is the best opportunity for lifting people out of poverty, but free competition must also remain fair.

He says alleviating poverty in Asia, Latin America and Africa will help reduce injustice, conflict, radicalism and terrorism.
