Top US Official to Meet With Latin American Officials on Security, Trade

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte will travel to Central and South America next week to meet with regional officials on a range of issues, including security and trade.

On Monday, Negroponte will begin a two-day visit to Medellin, Colombia, where he is leading the U.S. delegation to a meeting of the Organization of American States General Assembly.

He will travel to El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala from June 3 through June 6. While in those countries, Negroponte is scheduled to meet with government and business leaders on issues including the Merida Initiative, in which nations partner to fight criminal organizations.

Discussions are also expected to cover commercial relations, trade, development and security concerns.
