Lebanese Troops Kill Suspected Suicide Bomber

TEXT SIZE - +

Lebanon's military says troops have shot and killed a man suspected of wearing an explosive belt near a Palestinian refugee camp.

Officials provided few details on Saturday's incident near the Ein el-Helweh camp outside the southern city of Sidon.

Hours earlier, an explosive device killed a soldier in the town of Abdeh near the northern city of Tripoli.

Lebanese security officials say a second device found nearby was defused before it could explode.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora led a second day of talks Saturday with leaders of rival parliamentary blocs about forming a national unity government.

Mr. Siniora is expected to present a possible Cabinet lineup to Lebanon's new President Michel Suleiman.

Lebanon is trying to recover from sectarian violence that nearly resulted in a civil war.

Lebanon's pro-Western ruling party recently agreed to form a national unity government with the Hezbollah-backed opposition. The agreement calls for a 30-member Cabinet that gives Hezbollah veto power over government decisions.

Lebanon's parliament also elected Mr. Suleiman, a former army chief, as president as part of the agreement. He took office Monday.
