Mauritanian PM to Form New Government

TEXT SIZE - +

Mauritania's president has reappointed Yahya Ould Ahmed El Waghef as prime minister and asked him to form a new government, several hours after the previous government resigned.

Mr. Waghef and his Cabinet stepped down earlier Thursday, pre-empting a vote of no confidence by challengers within the ruling party.

Mr. Waghef was first appointed prime minister in May, after the sudden resignation of Prime Minister Zeine Ould Zeidane.

Both governments were under pressure to better handle soaring food prices and attacks by al-Qaida's north African allies.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
