Six suicide bombers attacked the compound of a provincial governor in central Afghanistan Sunday, killing 22 people and wounding at least 37 others.

Afghanistan's Interior Ministry said the attackers stormed the compound of the governor of Parwan province, Abdul Basir Salangi, as a security meeting with the local police chief and at least two NATO advisors was under way.  The governor was not harmed.

The ministry said the dead included 16 civilian government employees and six policemen.

Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) condemned the attack, saying "it is another example of despicable behavior by insurgents."

In other violence, four NATO soldiers were killed Sunday in three separate incidents in eastern Afghanistan.  A NATO statement says three service members died in bomb blasts, while the fourth was killed in an insurgent attack.

The office of the French president said the soldier who died in the insurgent attack was French and part of a support operation for the Afghan army in Kapisa province.
