Australia Ends Search for Survivors of Capsized Boat

Australian authorities say they have called off a major air and sea search for survivors of a boat carrying at least 55 asylum-seekers that capsized off Christmas Island.

Air searchers found the submerged boat Sunday.

Thirteen bodies, along with life jackets and debris have been spotted near the island - an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean.

The Australian Coast Guard says it will not be making any immediate effort to recover the bodies.

Hundreds of refugees have died in boat accidents in recent years, many of them from Afghanistan, Iran and Sri Lanka.
