Blast in Northwest Pakistan Kills At Least 6

A bomb targeting a pro-government tribal elder has killed at least six people and wounded about a dozen others in northwest Pakistan.

The blast targeted elder Malik Habibullah Khan Monday in the town of Doaba, 190 kilometers west of the capital Islamabad in Pakistan's tribal belt, where the Taliban and al-Qaida have long been active.

Habibullah Khan was not in the vehicle targeted but the Associated Press reports that his brother and a bodyguard were killed in the blast along with bystanders. The bomb heavily damaged a number of buildings in the area.

Pakistani media outlets report the attack was condemned by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. His government has advocated peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban, who have targeted government officials and their allies in the past.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and AFP.
