Suicide Bomber Kills 7 Near Pakistani Minister's Home

TEXT SIZE - +

Pakistani police say a suicide bomber has killed seven people and wounded at least 21 others outside the home of a provincial government minister in northwest Pakistan.  Monday's attack came just two days after the son of the same minister was shot dead by suspected Islamist militants.

Police say the information minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, was receiving condolences for his son's death at his home in the town of Pabbi, near the provincial capital, Peshawar, when a teenage suicide bomber tried to get past security.  The attacker detonated his explosives after being intercepted, killing at least three police officers.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for Monday's bombing.

Hussain, a senior member of the province's ruling Awami National Party, is an outspoken critic of the Taliban.  A Taliban spokesman warned of more attacks against members of the party, claiming it was allied with the United States.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
