Cambodians Voting in General Elections

Voting has begun in Cambodia, in general elections that are expected to extend Prime Minister Hun Sen's 28-year rule.

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy alleges the long-time ruler is running an unfair vote.

Sam Rainsy and his Cambodia National Rescue Party say the prime minister's Cambodian People's Party is afraid of the opposition's growing popularity. He accuses the government of setting up a system that ensures Hun Sen of winning another term.

The CPP denies the allegations of fraud and predicts a landslide win. It credits the prime minister with bringing economic prosperity to Cambodia after decades of war, chaos, and mass murder.

Sam Rainsy returned to Cambodia from self-imposed exile July 19 after Hun Sen arranged to pardon him for a series of crimes. Sam Rainsy said his convictions were politically motivated.

More than 9.6 million people are registered to vote in the elections. At least one-third are under the age of 30.
