Clinton in Brazil for Talks on Iran, Other Issues

TEXT SIZE - +

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Brazil - the fourth stop on her six-nation tour of Latin America.

Clinton held talks Wednesday with top Brazilian lawmakers, including Senate President Jose Sarney.

She was also meeting in the capital, Brasilia, with Brazil's foreign minister, Celso Amorim. The two officials signed cooperation agreements on combating climate change, promoting the advancement of women and fostering economic development in poor countries, particularly in Latin America and Africa.

Later in the day, Clinton is scheduled to hold talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. U.S. concerns about Iran's nuclear program are expected to feature high in the discussion.

Secretary Clinton flew to Brazil Tuesday from Chile, where she pledged long-term U.S. support to help the nation recover from last week's devastating earthquake.

Since leaving Washington late Sunday, Clinton also has visited Uruguay and Argentina.  She is to visit Costa Rica and Guatemala before returning to the United States at the end of the week.
