Police have opened fire on a student demonstration in eastern India, killing four people and wounding more than a dozen others.

The shooting occurred Wednesday in the town of Barpeta in Assam state during a student protest against a government effort to compile a list of Indian citizens.

Police say some 5,000 demonstrators began vandalizing shops and tried to storm a local official's office before authorities opened fire to try and disperse them.

The student union wants to halt the state government's updating of a list of Indian citizens, saying many residents are unable to provide identity papers and other proof of citizenship.
