Thousands of people marched in Israel Friday, in a demonstration commemorating the riots of October 2000, when Israeli police shot and killed 13 Israeli Arab youths.
Some 6,000 Israeli Arabs, including politicians and activists, gathered in the Galilee town of Kfar Kanna for the procession. Many waved Palestinian flags and held pictures of those killed in the violence.
Israeli Arab Knesset member Ahmed Tibi called on the Israeli government to indict the police officers responsible for the killing. He also told Israeli media that the level of racism in Israel has increased in the last 10 years.
In 2008, Israel's attorney general said there was insufficient evidence to convict police officers involved in the incident. He noted the victims' families had refused to allow autopsies to be conducted.
An Israeli inquiry in 2003 found the government and police did not properly handle the demonstrations.
Police said they did not have sufficient non-lethal gear to deal with the violent mobs.
The 2000 riots coincided with a period of violence between Israelis and Palestinians known as the Second Intifada, which started after peace talks collapsed.
