Israel Drops Warning Leaflets in Gaza After Mortar Firings

TEXT SIZE - +

Israeli warplanes have dropped leaflets warning Gaza residents to stay clear of the border, after Palestinian militants fired at least 10 mortar shells at Israel.

The leaflets warned residents not to come within 300 meters of the border fence, and to avoid involvement with weapons smugglers along the Gaza-Egypt border.

The Israeli army says some of the mortar shells landed in Israel near the Kerem Shalom crossing with the Gaza Strip.  There were no reports of casualties or damage.

The development comes one year after Israel carried out a three-week offensive against Hamas militants in Gaza.  Israel says the operation was aimed at halting rockets attacks into Israel.

Palestinian militants have since carried out sporadic rocket and mortar attacks that have provoked Israeli military strikes.

At least 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed in the fighting during Israel's Gaza offensive.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP.
